Florence County's Wild Rivers
The Pine River and Popple River |
Would
you like to traverse the path of an explorer probing unknown
wilderness in a birch bark canoe, or the trail of the trapper
seeking beaver or otter pelts, or perhaps follow the winding
courses of log
drives that once transported timber to early settlement
sawmills? Experience a canoe trip in Florence County's Wild
River Country. The best season for river running, particularly
on the white water sections, is April through May when spring
snow melt and rains swell the river's flow. Please visit
the
Publications page on the Florence County website for
recommended canoe and kayak trips.
Florence County has two of the three rivers designated as
Wisconsin Wild Rivers. They are the Pine and Popple, and the
Pike. In addition there is excellent canoeing on the Brule
River. All of these rivers have have portions on within the
Nicolet National Forest. The Wisconsin DNR has a very nice
Wild Rivers
website. There is a photo
gallery, maps, and some very nice write ups on the rivers.
Additional information is available from the Wild Rivers
Interpretive Center, 4793 Forestry Dr., Florence, WI 54121 or by
